‘Being Human’ is a supernatural drama-comedy series that follows the day-to-day lives of three twenty-something housemates living in Bristol – but instead of just being another run-of-the-mill soap opera of everyday people, this show has a twist: the brooding John Mitchell is a vampire over a hundred years old, now working as a hospital cleaner; the neurotic hospital nurse George Sands has a dual life as a werewolf; and Annie Sawyer is the insecure ghost who haunts the house, the place in which she died.

They just want to have a go at being normal; at being human.

‘Being Human’ was originally commissioned as a pilot for BBC3, and transmitted in February 2008. Written by Toby Whithouse (‘Doctor Who’, ‘Torchwood’, ‘No Angels’), it featured new-comers Guy Flanagan as John Mitchell and Andrea Riseborough as Annie, with Russell Tovey (best-known as Midshipman frame in the new series of ‘Doctor Who’) as George Sands. The show was then commissioned for a full series of six episodes, but with all but Russell Tovey recast: Aidan Turner now played Mitchell, with Lenora Crichlow as Annie. Billed as “sexy, witty and thrilling”, the show debuted in January 2009 on both BBC3 and the BBC HD channel; its unusual blend of social and supernatural storylines, interesting characters and dark sense of humour was received with great acclaim by its viewers, and it quickly became one of the most popular programmes available on the BBC’s iPlayer.

A second season of eight episodes was shown in 2010; its stories were even darker than before, and saw George’s girlfriend, Nina Pickering (played by Sinead Keenan) becoming involved with a sinister organisation as she sought to deal with the curse of lycanthropy inadvertently passed on by her boyfriend. Following the terrible events seen in the dramatic climax, our favourite housemates relocated from Bristol to Wales for a third season, which was transmitted early 2011 and now produced by BBC Cymru Wales.

After yet another a shocking season finale that saw the death of Mitchell, ‘Being Human’ returned for a fourth series. Even more shocks followed, including the departure of Nina, George and finally Annie; the destiny of George and Nina’s baby; and the introduction of a new group of housemates: werewolf Tom McNair (Michael Socha), neurotic vampire Hal (Damien Molony) and newly-made ghost Alex (Kate Bracken).
